We must be about the same age, Sophie. I remember going through “butterfly storms” & lots of other windshield “splats”, on summer vacations. My parents didn’t even have us get the polio vax that was so popular back in the 1960s. Elementary school included art, gym & music - they were not special courses. No seatbelts, no bike helmets & as kids we were virtually “free range” w/ parents unconcerned about where we disappeared to until dinner time. Feels like it was the last truly “free” childhood…
Those we the best days ever!!!! I miss them terribly and children today haven’t a clue about them.

Grew up in AZ, same experiences: drinking from hoses, building “forts” in the desert, skim boarding on our irrigated lawns (& looking for crawdads that came up w/ the irrigation), tubing the canals & rivers…I know everyone gets nostalgic for their childhoods but those things were REAL

We’re the last generation to know about real life.. like our parents and our great grandparents did.
PS I am 69 (1955) and my farmer that God Blessed me with ..he is a young 83 (1940) and he grows all of our vegetables and herbs and he planted some fruit trees. And like he mentioned to me …a while back …after dealing with ugly youth employees..in a cell phone store.. my farmer was quit on the drive home and then he turned to me and said… we grew up in the best of times and now we’re living in the worst of times… and I couldn’t agree more.
If younger kids today only knew what real life was like life before technology…. because one day they will find out when the grid goes down and they want be able to Google YouTube to find out how to survive. They need a set of books…Fox Fire Books. Oh well they can’t read a good book or the good Book and they can’t read their ancestors letters and recipes because they are written in cursive and I find it sad that parents and schools have done a disservice to children. Maybe there’s hope with schools like The Gift Hill School in the USVI and Warren Wilson College a 1,000 acre farm outside of my hometown of Asheville NC. Amazing souvenirs! Some folks are blessed with still having parents and the family country home and land to visit! I'm 61 living in Montreal Quebec. I grew up in a French speaking family. 'Tons of snow piling up, and a hooray day once in a while when we had to close schools (announced on the radio) following a snowstorm. We had a family camp in the Adirondacks for half a century. Mom started her labor in the US and passed the border just in time for my delivery in Canada LOL! I met so many patriotic people as time passed, thus partaking in more American festivities than my Quebec ones! But yeah, those were the good days where all our neighbours' doors were unlocked and kids around the block going in and out without anyone really noticing!

Your life .. was beautiful and magical like our life.. I was raised by my parents and my dad’s mother.. she was born in 1893 and she was a brilliant businesswoman … who built the 18 unit motel and restaurant.. where I was raised… the restaurant served all homemade seasonal foods and desserts that my mother made along with delicious rolls.. cinnamon rolls… southern biscuits and cookies and pies with beautiful peaks of Meringue … chocolate meringue being my favorite…
My grandmother .. my dad’s mother… during the early mornings at the restaurant she taught me how to make cakes starting at the age of 3.. I stood on a step stool and she tied a apron around me…. And she taught me how to measure .. sift and mix and bake .. and how to set the oven to the proper temperature…grease and shake the bottom with a smeg of flour… and of course the sides as well…. or line the pan with parchment paper…
and she use to call me Susie Q… because she didn’t like my name.. my dad called me Sarah Kay and I called myself kk… here’s a funny story about me and my “mom” grandmother… it’s a hoot… one day I was in the restaurants kitchen mixing a chocolate cake and I stuck my finger in the batter .. and of course I had to lick the divine chocolate (real chocolate ) off of my finger … mom turned around and said.. I saw what you did… I said you saw what mom… and she said … I saw how you put your finger in the batter and then you licked it .. and I have told you not to do that…. the cakes are for our guests… and I said but mom you were turned around and you were chopping vegetables .. and she said Susie Q… I have eyes in the back of my head … lol .. and you know something Sophie I never found those eyes!!! 😝 lol

I so enjoyed you taking the time to share it with me.. oh and later on after my family sold the motel and restaurant .. and my parents bought a Apple orchard.. with a two story farm house and it had grapes.. strawberries and blackberries in the yard and a antique wrought iron fence line that was covered in beautiful roses 🌹 a big variety of old fashioned roses and rows and row of daffodils 🌼 and we also had a big rock outdoor cook stove made from the beautiful mountain rocks found in the river beds in the WNC mountains.. and it had a beautiful rock chimney .. it was a fabulous place to grow up and it was the first house I ever lived in because the office of the motel was also our living room … and I could tell you a lot of stories about life there too … it was a hoot and there were some interesting characters that stayed with us…PS my farmer he grew up on a big Hop reach in the state of Washington.. life was good way back when.
