An excellent reminder to do business with real people, as much as possible.

We can choose a locally owned bank, hardware/ home improvement store, and restaurant over a corporate chain or franchise. A local barber shop or hair salon, veterinarian, pet sitter / walker, boarding kennel, pet store. Shop at thrift & charity shops, purchasing used clothing, furniture, appliances, cars... This has the added bonus of reducing the amount of stuff going into landfills and incinerators.

We can support independent farms & market gardeners (growing produce; this is why NJ is called 'the Garden State) in our area, and independent local grocery stores, where they still exist, instead of supporting the increasing corporate control over our food supply. Or support independent farms that ship- like AmosMillersOrganicFarm - PolyfaceFarms - WhiteOakPastures - NourishedbyNature - and more, instead of corporate food suppliers.

While we still have a choice...

Independent physicians are becoming an 'endangered species' but the American Assoc. of Physicians & Surgeons has a list. Nursing homes, and even funeral homes have been increasingly bought up by corporations, though many still keep the look of a locally owned business - so ASK.
