The Universal Ostrich Farm (UOF) is a family farm that has been raising ostriches for 35 years. In recent years their focus has been exclusively on groundbreaking antibody research.
The farm is currently occupied by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (although the ostriches are not used for food!), which has issued an order to cull all of the nearly 400 healthy birds that remain after the farm experienced the death of 69 young birds in the wake of avian flu accompanied by pseudomonas infection In December 2024. Older birds were not infected, having antibodies from a previous infection, and many younger birds recovered completely from the diseases, arguably having developed antibodies as a result of being infected. The farmers have appealed to the Supreme Court to stop the cull; the Supreme Court issued a stay order to prevent the slaughter pending its decision whether to accept the case. However, it appears that the CFIA is currently carrying out the cull in secret, as fewer and fewer birds can be seen on the property. The birds pose no danger of transmitting avian flu, so why is the CFIA so intent on destroying them?
According to UOF, “With American poultry flocks now under threat from the H5N1 bird flu, effective antibodies derived from ostrich eggs could be the missing link in disease prevention and treatment.”
Thus, ostrich egg antigens could undermine the profitability of the global vaccine industry.
Not only did the CFIA declare its intention to slaughter the entire flock, it also required the family to hand over everything related to their research.

OstriGen is a 2 year-old company licensing and commercializing the research of veterinary medicine professor Yasuhiro Tsukamoto at Kyoto Prefecture University in Japan. Tsukamoto and colleagues study adapting the immune system of the ostrich to develop human antibodies. The ostrich is an ancient species, which over its 23 million years has formed a strong immune system that reacts to a wide range of antigens and produces a high volume of immunoglobulin Y antibodies…. A single ostrich hen in her 55-year lifetime, says OstriGen, can produce 22 kilograms of immunoglobulin Y antibodies in the yolks of her eggs, about 4 grams per egg.
