Hundreds of Serious Heart Rhythm Disturbances Following COVID Vaccination in U.S.: Journal 'Heart Rhythm 02'
More than half of patients suffering ventricular fibrillation following COVID vaccination died, per CDC/FDA data.
A research letter published last month in Heart Rhythm O2 found hundreds of cases of serious heart rhythm disturbances called ‘ventricular fibrillation’ (VF) and ‘ventricular tachycardia’ (VT) following both viral vector (Johnson Johnson) and mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech), in the United States.
“In the U.S. a total of 516 ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) (167 VF and 349 VT) events were reported as an adverse event post severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)–targeted messenger RNA (mRNA)/viral vector vaccination from the beginning of the vaccination until May 2023,” the authors confirm.
Their study focused on reporting the incidence of VF and VT following COVID vaccination as of May 26, 2023, utilizing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Vaccine Adverse Eent Reporting System (VAERS) database.
The authors emphasized the “passive” nature of the VAERS platform, which means that the system only logs vaccine-related injuries as they are proactively reported by injured parties.
While VAERS does not actively seek cases of vaccine injury, it does help “establish unusual occurrences of adverse events among individuals postvaccination,” the authors note.
Cases of VF and VT usually occurred after seven days post-vaccination and after the second dose.
Men were significantly more likely to be affected than women.
“The absolute numbers of VF and VT reported were higher in males compared with females (121 VF and 204 VT vs 45 VF and 145 VT),” the study reads.
Patients over the age of 40 were also at higher risk: “The number of VF/VT events were more among individuals ≥40 years of age.”
Sadly, 88 out of the 167 VF events (52.69%) and 74 of the 349 VT events (21.20%) reported “had death as the outcome.”
The authors cited a U.K. study using the English National Immunization Database of COVID-19 vaccination that found 86,754 reports of cardiac arrhythmia occurring 1 to 28 days postvaccination.
