Blindness in Both Eyes Following COVID-19 Vaccination: 'European Journal of Ophthalmology'
Doctors say patient's vision loss occurred only a "few days" following a third COVID shot, "strongly suggesting a relationship between both events."
A case study published Tuesday in the European Journal of Ophthalmology reports a man who experienced sudden vision loss in his left and right eyes following a COVID-19 mRNA vaccination.
Pfizer’s safety data—only made available by order of a Texas federal judge—show the company and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) were aware that various eye disorders were linked to the shot before making it available to the public.

The case study authors aimed to “report a case of sequential bilateral ischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) following the third dose of anti-COVID 19 vaccination.”
The case involved a 73-year-old Caucasian male patient who had “no known medical history.”
The man complained of sudden vision loss in his right eye only 18 days following a third dose of a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID jab.
Ten days later, he lost vision in his left eye.
Both eyes showed signs of ischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) with widespread hemorrhages (bleeding) across all four quadrants of the retina.
The retina, situated at the innermost layer of the eye, detects light and transmits signals to the brain, facilitating vision.
CRVO is an eye condition characterized by partial or complete blockage of the main vein responsible for draining blood from the retina.

The authors believe the man’s case represents the first reported instance of CRVO following COVID vaccination.
“To our knowledge, we report the first case of bilateral CRVO in a healthy patient after anti-COVID 19 vaccination,” they write. “CRVO occurred few days following third shot of vaccine followed by a sequential CRVO in the fellow eye in a patient with recently diagnosed very mild hypertension and no thrombo-embolic risk factors.”
The doctors state the ordeal “strongly suggest[s] a relationship” between the vaccine and the CRVO onset.
They recommend adding CRVO to the list of eye complications related to coronavirus shots: “Nowadays, CRVO should be kept in mind as a potential side effect of Covid-19 vaccination and should be added to the spectrum of their ophthalmic complications,” the case study reads.
