200% Spike in Pharmaceutical Drug Injuries Between 2020 and 2021 'Due to the Massive Inclusion of COVID-19 Vaccine Reports': Journal 'Scientific Reports'
Rise in 2021 adverse event (AE) reports “mostly due to the over-reporting of certain AEs that flourished during the massive immunisation process with COVID-19 vaccines.”
A new peer-reviewed study from Scientific Reports analyzed adverse events (AEs) linked to COVID-19 vaccines within multiple spontaneous reporting systems (SRSs) used to track injuries related to pharmaceutical drugs.
The study authors looked at three adverse event reporting systems: the World Health Organisation (WHO) global individual case safety reports database (VigiBase®), the United States Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), and the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database (JADER).
They found a 200% increase in the reporting rate factor (RRF) among 35 different diseases from 2020 to 2021, when COVID-19 vaccines were widely administered.
“Findings revealed a sudden over-reporting of 35 AEs (≥ 200%) during the pandemic, with an increment of the RRF value in 2021 of at least double the RRF reported in 2020,” the authors confirm.
The increase in adverse events was “due to the massive inclusion of COVID-19 vaccine reports.”
The study authors also emphasized that for one reporting system, nearly half of adverse events in 2021 were linked to the COVID jab: “[A]lmost half (49.2%) of the reports deposited in VigiBase® in 2021 come from COVID-19 vaccines,” they write.
The study also highlighted certain reported AEs of special interest—according to a multi-database study comprising data from seven European countries—had jumped more than 200% between 2020 and 2021.
These AEs included “pericarditis (392.7 %), myocarditis (318.0 %) and Guillain-Barre syndrome (200.0 %).” Pericarditis is inflammation of the heart's outer lining, while myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle. Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare, potentially life-threatening neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.
Moreover, the reporting rate of menstrual disorders increased “over 1000%.”
In their conclusion, the study authors reaffirm that the spike in adverse events in 2021 was “mostly due to the over-reporting of certain AEs that flourished during the massive immunisation process with COVID-19 vaccines.”
